It’s noted often that the Colorado wine industry, as it stands today, has grown from almost nothing since 1990. With more than 70 vineyards and wineries in operation today, to say it’s been a rapid rise is an understatement.

Dithyramb winery's winesPerhaps there is no better representation of unexpected growth than Dithyramb Winery. Sean and Candice Bundy started the Centennial winery in 2008—out of their suburban home. The two had been avid home wine makers for more than a decade and decided, simply, it was time to make it a profession.

After attaining executive wine sommelier certifications from the International Wine Guild in 2007, the husband and wife team convinced the city to license their home-based winery a year later.

Dithyramb, named after a hymn sung to Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, has released a handful of meads and honey wines, and the 2008 Chardonnay ($14) and Satyr’s Blood Rose ($12.75). Reds include the 2008 Bromios (a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend), Cabernet Franc ($20) and a Syrah ($17).

Dithryramb produced 275 cases in 2008 and will have 650 cases available from 2009—all grapes are sourced from vineyards in Palisade, part of Colorado’s Grand Valley AVA.

Expect similar gains in growth this year, and perhaps a move into a commercial space in 2011 because it’s a safe bet the Bundys wouldn’t mind having their house to themselves again.

Dithyramb's winery Best bottle from the winemakers' perspective: The 2008 Cabernet Franc. “This varietal excels in Colorado, and this vintage performed quite well,” Candice says.

Prices: $15-range

Tasting room: Since the winery still operates out of their home, the tasting room is only open by private appointment. Evenings and weekends preferred. There is no charge for a tour and tasting.
