Garrett Estate Cellars 2008 chardonnayThere’s a whole lot of fruit on the Garrett Estate Cellars vineyard. With more than 35 acres available for grape growing, its on pace to become one of the largest estate wineries in Colorado.

That said, this is our first review of a Garrett selection featuring wine made with Garrett’s grapes – or Colorado fruit for that matter. Well, the grapes in Olathe are good. The winemaking is not too shabby, either.

The 2008 chardonnay, one of the winery’s first class of white wines, is a solid effort. We’ll stop short of calling it remarkable, but for 11 bucks, it exceeds expectations.

This chardonnay, which is unoaked, showcases mild smells of apricot and orange peels that are backed up by a tartness on the taste buds. Flavors include banana peel and grapefruit. This is not a heavily acidic wine; there are just enough acids to remind you they exist.

The flavors aren’t razor sharp, but they seem just crisp enough. There’s a little residual sugar that’ll hang on the palate, making this wine a tiny teeny tad sweeter than just plain dry. There’s even a light hint of complexity on the finish if you strain.

This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with light meats and fish. The flavors of the food should enhance the mild flavors in the glass.

It’s a wine not at all unlike the town it was grown in, Olathe. A blink-and-you-miss-it town that is really worth a stop in. This is a bottle of wine that might get lost on the shelf as a relative newcomer, but if you hit the breaks in the wine shop asile and pick it up, you’ll be a happy customer.

Who will like this wine: Those who prefer their chardonnay sans butter and like a pop of tart fruits rather than tropical flavors with their whites.
