We’ve been waiting for months for a Colorado red to come out of Infinite Monkey Theorem’s Quonset hut. In early July, winemaker Ben Parsons bottled the highly anticipated 2008 petit verdot, sourced from Grand Valley grapes.
The wait to enjoy one of his Colorado reds is not over just yet, though.

Is there any activity more quentisential in wine country than a picnic with a cold bottle of white wine? Methinks not. Bringing a backpack filled with cheese and crackers, and a few fresh mozzerala and basil sandwiches to pair with a delightful viognier is simply heaven. While Palisade still could use a cheese shop in town that serves gourmet sandwiches, there are still fantastic ways to picnic. Grab food at the grocery store or head into Grand Junction to build a proper picnic basket. Once that is squared away, the only question that remains is where to go to enjoy an hour or so.

The first aspect that is noticeable about Garrett Estates Cellars is its size. With just a 2008 and 2009 vintage under its belt, it already is growing grapes on 35 acres. With plans of adding to that total, the Olathe winery has the potential to become the largest estate winery in the state. Whether that comes to fruition, it’s a good bet this will stay a small-time family operation.

Turns out it’s a good idea to make a few menu items that appease the big boss. Black Pearl Chef Kate Horton says her caprese risotto is a favorite of owner Steve Whited, who happens to be a vegetarian.

Jack Rabbit Hill’s current release of its pinot gris is merely organic. We’ll forgive winemaker Lance Hanson.
While organic itself is rare in Colorado, Hanson has set the bar high in his growing standards by upping the ante to full on biodynamic farming (think organic, but on steroids in a strictly metaphorical sense). Jack Rabbit is one of just two dozen-ish wineries in the world practicing this level of farming.
