If I hear anyone else say they don’t like Rieslings because they are too sweet, I might just explode. Or at least open another bottle and sip it quietly on my porch and leisurely watch the sun set over the trees in front of my north Denver home.
To say Rieslings are too sweet is to admit to only trying a few. There is a broad range, in fact, going from dry to late-harvest sweet bombs for dessert. Garrett Estate Cellars is one of the new kids on the Colorado wine block, having just released its first vintage in 2008. Based in Olathe, and set on a 35-acre vineyard, the estate winery has produced some really solid whites to date. And while the 2008 reds are still in the barrel, we got a hold of two recent releases that will be perfect for drinking in the lazy September days of summer. Sign up by Sept. 5 to be a ColoradoWino.com eMagazine newsletter subscriber for a chance to wine the 2009 rose and 2009 pinot gris.

The first time around, we didn’t get to crown a champion. The red wine blind tasting throwdown between Colorado and Virginia finished a tie due to an unfortunate accident with a bottle of petit verdot in transit from the East Coast. Methinks Colorado would have won, with a Canyon Wind petit verdot ready to compete. Sigh, we were forced to drink the inky red with a long finish from Canyon Wind and speculate after Colorado took the cabernet franc category and Virginia the red blend.
